I had called to have an estimate for a roof repair that was leaking through my bathroom ceiling. I was told that Chris would be there at 3pm to do estimate. He called that day and said he couldn’t make it because he had to pick his kid up at school. I was unavailable to be there but he said that was not necessary. He left me a brochure sheet from the company and handwritten was an estimate for $27,000 at the bottom. It stated to replace all 3 skylights and both sections of my roof even though one section and two skylights were fine. When I contacted him he told me, and I quote, “It’s an insurance job isn’t it? We’ll ask for more than we need and can always come down.” I informed him the insurance company wanted him to contact them and give an estimate and forwarded him the info. I received a text from him the following week stating he talked to them and they didn’t offer much push back. He’d have a written estimate to me by weeks end. Fast forward two weeks, no estimate so I called. Chris tells me he never talked to the insurance and they don’t do estimates unless I sign a contract, and he was doing me a favor by even coming out to look at the roof. I called to speak to the owner, but surprisingly was unsuccessful, at which time I was connected to Bob, supposedly the sales manager and Chris’s boss. When informed of what transpired wasn’t too concerned and said if I wanted I can wait two weeks until he got back from vacation and he’d come out to look at the roof. Thanks but no thanks. I didn’t know your business was doing paying customers a favor by coming out to their house to give an estimate, not to mention inflating the estimate to make money off my insurance company.

Dear Greg, I’m sorry for the trouble you had in getting the estimate done for your situation. I reached out to Chris on this and went over it with him. A couple of items to clarify. First, when doing an estimate, especially with an insurance company, we always want to include anything that is possibly connected with the problem area. That is for two reasons. One, to get a job that can have a warranty, you need to do everything, at least in the area and the connected areas. Secondly, With an insurance company it is about getting you back being whole again. A partial job, or repair, usually doesn’t get that done. If after dealing with the insurance company, you can’t get everything covered that arguably should be, sometimes we can still do some work that will solve problems, albeit, not with a warranty. So, that is what he meant, and we direct our estimators to do a complete and thorough job of including all that is connected. It is not about overcharging, but charging enough. I’m sorry he was not clear on this point. As to Chris saying he was doing you a favor, he meant he had done more than typical, without having a signed contract. The other option we offer is to pay a fee for a written estimate, which covers dealing with the insurance company. That can be very involved, with much back-and-forth , and possibly, for all that, get no job for that time and effort. That fee is refunded when people have us do the work. Chris saying that he was doing you a favor, wasn’t the best way to talk about that, and I have spoken to him about it. To be clear, we are doing business, and most importantly, that includes taking care of people within the lines of engagement, and sometimes, going beyond that to be more helpful. That is our position. Obviously we have failed in your case to communicate well, and for that I apologize. I would like a chance to speak do you directly if you’d be willing. Thanks for the chance to respond. Respectfully, Steven Rott
