Almost a year ago I had State Building Company come out to quote a roof replacement as my previous roof started leaking. Mike gave me 3 quotes for different material. Vista, Legacy, and metal. We originally agreed on Legacy but I found out post installation the installers used Vista, both had the same warranty so I wasn’t terribly concerned. I advised Mike of this and the invoice was changed to reflect Vista with no hassle. Almost a year later and the roof has done well, I’m very happy with this company and would recommend.

We hired State Building Company last year for multiple large (for us) projects - new tile in our kitchen, dining room, and a bathroom; new siding; insulation in the attic, new molding installation. They show up when they're ready with as little notice as you will permit, but a good many contractors are like that in Michigan since 2007 wiped out a lot of contracting companies. The floor and siding took twice as long to complete than State or any other company had estimated. The tile is uneven to the degree that I have tripped several times and I am concerned my vacuum is being damaged by it, the new molding looks worse than what it replaced, and my husband has had to reinstall pieces of the siding that have fallen off the house. I have not contacted the company about any of these things - the floor would have to be torn out and reinstalled to make it right and I cannot imagine another month of that experience. The company's "tile guy" told me he learned how to tile from a library book. It shows. We decided to have the company pour a new driveway. For some reason the lower half of the driveway, which was poured on the second day, was messed up and failed to whiten for more than four months. We waited 2 weeks to drive on it rather than the 4 days suggested and our cars STILL dented the concrete. I contacted the company after inspection the owner confirmed that there was definitely something wrong with it. I was assured that it would be replaced because the company stood behind its work, then told that due to inclement weather they couldn't do it until spring. Come spring, I was told by the owner that since it had finally whitened they wouldn't be replacing it. Besides, the company had loads of new bid requests pouring in and they're extremely busy. Literally a couple of days later, deep and good sized holes began appearing in the driveway and there are now a large number. After consulting with several concrete contractors and showing them photos of what was happening, the universal consensus was that the concrete is failing catastrophically less than 10 months after pouring and it needs to be replaced. All said that they would replace it at their cost if they had put it in and deal with the concrete supplier themselves. After sending the owner multiple emails, I was finally told via the salesman that I would have to take it up with their supplier. I am going to bet that even if the supplier would deal with me - I am not its customer, State Building is - I would be expected to pay for labor. Again. I thought when the company took $7,000 for a new driveway, a company that claims that concrete is their specialty would provide a quality, long-lasting driveway. I also believed that when I used a local company recommended by local people, I was assured of hiring one that stood behind its work - especially after telling me it would replace the driveway! I will now be spending several hundred dollars to have the concrete tested and then filing a lawsuit that I gave the company every opportunity to avoid. I would NEVER have hired any company that didn't stand behind its work! It's a shame that things like this can happen to homeowners even after doing everything they can do to avoid such an experience. Be cautious about hiring this company - they have so much work coming in they couldn't care less about customer satisfaction or the company's reputation so make absolutely sure that your project is perfect before calling the project finished.
