This isn’t the first time I’ve used Kurber construction and it won’t be the last. They installed a beautiful egress window in my basement and I love it. They were on time and kept in contact with me about the whole process. All three of the workers were extremely polite and friendly and the music they played while working was even appropriate for the littles running around my house.

Erick Kurber and his crew were very responsive when we asked them for their help after experiencing severe water damage in our kitchen. They were able to quickly and professional remove all the cabinetry and then reassemble the cabinets after the flooring was repaired. Kurber also handled the drywall repair that was done very professionally and on time.

I would recommend Kurber Construction to anyone that needs quality remodeling work done on time and at a competitive price.

Kurber build a pool house and cabana bar in our backyard, from top to bottom, and the experience may have been one of the best I've had in the many years I've used contractors for large projects.   The project entailed framing, roofing, siding, painting, cabinet install, countertop install, drywall, trim, and door installation among other small items so a very large project that was managed exceptionally.   From the initial consultation I felt great trust and really fell in love with the project management software and their PM methodology as it filled the gap I see in most contractors with amazing communication as well as setting expectations along the way.   Erick was great to work with and we are more than elated with the final product from each of a quality, time, and cost perspective.   Without a doubt I would highly recommend Erick and Kurber and we will be calling on him for 2 additional large projects (kitchen and rec room) in the future for sure.

Our experience with Erick Kurber and Kurber Construction was a pleasure from start to finish. We vetted three highly-qualified contractors (Erick being one of them) prior to beginning the construction process. Erick stood out as the obvious choice for us. His professionalism, genuine interest in our project, knowledge of the construction business and attention to detail were some of the attributes that influenced our decision to build with Kurber Construction. We were impressed with Erick from the beginning, in that he had listened carefully to the preliminary information we presented to him concerning our project and what we hoped to accomplish and  addressed all these details in his proposal. The proposal was well-organized and presented in a clear and concise manner. Understanding our desire to build a quality, custom home, Erick was careful to include materials in the proposal that met our high standards but also enabled us to adhere to the budget we had established. We also appreciated the additional upgrades and options included in the proposal for our consideration. It gave us “food for thought” that we might not have otherwise considered. We were given the opportunity to choose those items which were most relevant to us. When all was said and done, Erick completed the project on time and within budget. It is important to note that Erick did not present us with the lowest overall bid, but our confidence in his ability to provide us with the service and workmanship we were looking for was the major factor in our decision to build with Kurber Construction.

Having lived in our new home for over six months now, we are extremely pleased with the overall outcome. The house is everything we had envisioned. Erick understood our passion for detail and consistently produced work that reflected his desire to meet, and often surpass, our expectations. It is worth noting that my husband has been in the residential construction business for over 30 years. His level of experience and expertise makes him an excellent judge of quality and character. Erick did a super job for us in a full condo remodel in Waukesha. We knew we could trust Erick to be professional, honest, and to deliver work of the highest quality. In fact, we valued his work so much that we brought him back for a garage remodel. He delivered on time, on budget, and with a great attitude. Erick offered advice on finishes and design when we asked, but also empowered us to make informed decisions without judgement. I strongly discourage using Kurber Construction for your home remodeling project. Our project started late and as a result, Erick took our house through the polar vortex uninsulated. He didn’t bother to let us know that our furnace was failing during the day and that he needed to bring in space heaters while he was working. Overnight, the furnace shut off again and a pipe froze and flooded our basement. He charged $2,049 to “mitigate” the flood even though our house was under his watch when it happened. His “mitigation” consisted of one dehumidifier and two fans, plus the emergency plumbing visit.

Right before we moved back in, the plumbers came to pressurize the pipes and discovered that there were leaks in the laundry room pipes from when the pipes froze over the winter. The finished and painted drywall had to be cut out so the pipes could be fixed. Erick said he wouldn’t charge extra since this was from the pipe breaking over winter and came back later the same day and said there would be an extra charge.

At the beginning of our project we agreed that my best friend who has been doing tile work professionally for 20 years would do our bathroom shower. Thank God he did because otherwise the shower would have had to be reframed because the boards Erick used were warped and out of plumb. They were close to 1” out of plumb in some places. When I put my level on the end board for the shower, he said it looked plumb even though the board looked like a crescent moon in the middle. My friend had to do a lot of extra mudding to properly level out the wall so that tile could be laid.

We ordered appliances but couldn’t have them moved in by the delivery people because our project was running behind. Shortly before move-in, Erick emailed my wife telling her that moving the appliances into the house was “out of scope” despite never telling either of us previously that this would be our responsibility. After talking with a handful of contractors afterward, they were shocked that a general contractor would make the homeowners move their own appliances into the house. Being in the trades, this shocked me too, especially given the $120,000+ price tag on our project.

We were also very surprised when my wife received a call from the plumbing fixture supplier telling her that there was an unpaid, past due balance and that they had the ability to place a lien on our home if the balance was not paid. At that point, Erick had been paid a little over $100,000!

Overall, our project with Kurber Construction was terrible. I do not recommend even getting a bid from Erick. I'd hate to see anyone else get taken advantage of like we were.

**Jason Ohms & Stephanie Lamsam are the same project**. Though the project was completed April of 2019 and after a lengthy process to collect money owed they continue to slander us simply for expecting to be paid for agreed upon and provided services.  Also they have posted these duplicitous reviews on several sites about a month apart.  All other sites have rejected the second review due to being for the same transaction.  We were working on the home during the “polar vortex” however it was not uninsulated. Some insulation did have to be removed to complete mechanical work but temporary barriers and auxiliary heat were used to protect from the cold.  We did have pipes freeze when the existing furnace had an unrelated mechanical failure overnight.  The client was made aware of all of this in real time.  Regarding the amount for the repairs it was discussed with and paid for by the clients insurance, added on to their claim with no out of pocket expenses. We did rent a commercial dehumidifier and air movers intended for this purpose. They were not billed for any repairs when we pressurized the system and found that some other pipes were damaged when the furnace failed.  The issue with the shower walls is simply not true.  The friend tile guy took over a month to tile the shower, was in the way and routinely left messes that myself and my crew had to clean up to continue with our work.  When informed them their friend was negatively affecting the schedule they became defensive and blamed our work with no actual issues.  We actually did install the appliances even though the client insisted on having them delivered before we were ready after I had asked them not to so we could have the delivery service get them to their general locations.  My plumbing fixture vendor did contact the client because I asked them to do so when the client was refusing to pay for the  fixtures installed in their home as it is their right to notify a homeowner of lien rights for unpaid invoices just as a homeowner is entitled to lien waivers on paid invoices.

We had a terrible experience with Kurber Construction for our home renovation and I do not recommend using Kurber as your general contractor. During our project, Erick Kurber was dishonest, disorganized, over-promised and under-delivered, and resorted to legal assistance for payment rather than discussing our legitimate concerns regarding double- and over-billing. His unethical behavior and unwillingness to communicate with us ultimately yielded nearly $8,000 of credits off our final payment through a legal settlement.

Erick unsuccessfully attempted to manage the general contracting and finance/billing of our full-home renovation and was a complete disaster throughout the entire project. Erick did not adhere to the contract timeline and finished our project 3 months late. We had cameras in our home during the entire project because we weren’t living there. Erick worked at such a slow pace and we couldn’t believe how little was accomplished when he was working. The legal negotiation revealed that he charged $90/hour for his work, which, in my opinion is about $80/hour too much.

Communication was extremely poor, and we found Erick to be extremely arrogant. He forgot things he told us and then would tell us he didn’t say them, he’d change his story, or he’d make up things he said in the past. We quickly learned that Erick was always right and always had an answer for everything. Erick did not take accountability for his mistakes. Instead he blamed his hard-working subcontractors who are the only reason our project was ever completed.

At the beginning of our project, Erick provided a project estimate. I had an hour phone conversation with him to clarify several parts of the estimate. I took meticulous notes about what was and was not included in the estimate. Curiously, throughout the project, several items that were previously included in the estimate either increased in cost or became extra charges that weren’t included.

When I sourced our countertops to save thousands because Erick's cost unsurprisingly increased over his original estimate, he tried charging me his 22% contractor markup for pulling the work from him. He said we discussed paying the markup if any work was pulled at the beginning of the project, however we most definitely did not discuss this. As a Finance professional, there is no way I would 1) agree to pay a markup on work not performed, 2) spend my own time organizing the countertop install if I was still going to pay him a fee, and 3) pay for something not agreed upon in the contract.

We needed to install a support post under our I-Beam because we removed a wall. Erick told us we needed to pay for the change order otherwise our house wouldn’t pass code. Erick charged ~$2,700, but according to another contractor who quoted it after we went into the legal negotiation, it should have cost $1,200 max.

There are so many more examples that demonstrate how poorly our project went and Erick managed to make every part of it miserable. The service he provided was inadequate and embarrassing. I tried asking Erick to explain his billing where it didn’t make sense via email several times. I asked Erick to meet with me to discuss my concerns several times. He did not agree to speak with me in person--ever. Instead, I got a legal notice advising me that Erick obtained legal representation and that I was to communicate with his lawyer going forward.

We are writing this review to warn others about the unscrupulous business practices we experienced during our project with Kurber Construction. We hope that you will think carefully about using Erick Kurber as your general contractor and use our experience as a word of warning.

*Please note, this review relates to our project only and represents my husband’s and my opinion.

I am responsible for everything that happens on my projects.  I value my team and do not blame my team for issues.  This project started as an insurance loss before I was ever involved. The client also had problems with the first water restoration company whom they fired and had nothing good to say about the second one.  The scope of work and level of finish provided by KC was far beyond what would have been needed to repair the water damage to the home.   Throughout the project the client was doing everything possible to manipulate the numbers using our proposal and requesting information on different levels of finish so that they could be sent to the insurance for supplemental payouts.  I believe they were reimbursed for work completed by us that was not paid for.  We did not start when originally projected as a result of our schedule, I accept full responsibility for that and this was discussed at that time. Once we were able to begin production we provided a completely revised project schedule.  During the project there were several scope changes requested by you as well as items required to bring your home up to code including engineering due to a load bearing column that had been removed prior to this project. My mistake in this area was I did not provide in writing and request signatures on the  schedule changes these items created.  That was all provided verbally.  For clarity this needs to be in writing with a signature request which I have begun doing. You had a friend do the tile as a side job which negatively affected schedule.  Mid project you took the information and selections you made with my team (one of these Items being countertops) that you had contracted with us and shopped them around. This affects schedule and was a breach of the agreed scope. When I brought this up to you, you told me “too bad, if you don’t give me the credit I will do it anyway and short pay you somewhere else”.  We were done 1 month after the revised schedule which did NOT include any of your requested scope changes, required code upgrades or delays from items you insisted on supplying. The final completion date was also agreed upon by all parties during the later part of production.  You signed a lump sum agreement at the start of the project and all changes were provided in writing by us, signed and approved by you.  Upon completion there were no expressed workmanship issues and all costs had been agreed on. The work you say should have cost  $1200 you had informed me that your husband had said that after you signed and work was completed. That is not a contractor quote and I respectfully disagree. After the completion of the project you became more confrontational than ever with refusal to pay and disputing items already paid for.  I tried to come to an agreement via email as I did not think it would be wise to meet in person with the demeanor of your communications. There was a couple days that you texted and emailed 15+ times stating I didn’t know how to do math and you didn’t pay me to make phone calls and read a tape measure.  When I reached out to your insurance adjuster about the final payment he informed me that you were not going to sign the competition form because you were “getting ready for a fight”. This is when I reached out to legal counsel as It seemed you were not interested in reasonable discussion.  You called NARI to complain when we were trying to collect  payment.  After review NARI deemed you had no reason not to pay and asked that you pay your bill. The credits you received were not owed to you in anyway.  I negotiated with my vendors so we could get them paid and not end up in court with you. I consider this theft and it was only agreed to so we could put this behind us.  I did not get paid for my own finish carpentry labor so we could take care of vendors.

I highly recommend Kurber construction. Erick & his team were always punctual & considerate. They did an excellent, high quality job in finishing our basement. We would definitely call on Erick again if we needed work done on our home.
